The in home consultation is a very important first step to any design project. Not only for the designer, but also for the client. The meeting lasts up to 2 hours and is filled with so much valuable ideas, design direction, and information that details the entire process. The client gets to know me and experience what it will be like to work together. Each design project, large or small should always start with a consultation. Even if we are just meeting to discuss window treatments.
We begin with touring the entire home so that I may get a good feel of how the spaces work with one another. This helps to determine the design style and functionality. After the walk-through, we discuss the client’s needs and wants of the project and I begin divulging any and all suggestions or insights I have gathered. Such as, furniture layouts to help balance the space or enhance flow from one space to another. Determine which pieces of furniture the client is wanting to keep, replace, or reupholster. We talk about the current lighting in the space and what additional lighting may be required. We also go over color palette options, wall coverings, or window treatments that can add aesthetics and functionality to the space. I also give direction on any accessories or styling that may benefit the design, including using any pieces from other areas of the home.
After the detailed discussion of the client’s goals for the overall design, we go over the services that I offer in detail, timeline and budget, and determine which service would best suit the client’s needs. For the DIY-er at heart, the consultation is the only service the client may require. Because of the amount of information given during the consultation, the client can use the recommendations and carry out the design themselves. If the client deems having a designer fulfill the entire process on their behalf, we continue by going over the design process in more detail, what the client should expect from the designer and what is expected of the client, which is laid out in the contract. Which will also be discussed during the consultation.
So in short, an In Home Consultation includes: (but definitely not limited to)
- Walk through of the entire home, determine design style and needs for improved function
- Timeline and Budget discussion
- Furniture layout recommendations, items to keep, item to procure
- Window treatments
- Existing lighting conditions, and any additions that may improve the design
- Discuss accessories for styling, using existing or adding new
- Discuss in detail the different services offered, contracts, and determine which option would be the best
- Discuss in further detail the design process and what is expected of the client
The time and money spent on the consultation is an undeniable valuable investment to the client and to the design process itself. I encourage you, that if you have debated whether or not to call upon a designer, this is a fabulous place to start. I give honest and helpful information to all who call upon my expertise. I pride myself on integrity.
