This project hit closer to “home” than any other, pun intended. My father reached out to me and asked if I would put together a design to remodel my childhood bathroom as a gift to my mother. After a split second decision, I got to work. The bathroom has a “Jack and Jill” layout and he did not want it to be an extensive renovation so the layout was kept the same. I did however, want to make the design more accessible due to the aging needs of my parents.
The concept of the design began with removing the tub/shower combination and installing a curbless shower to enable easier access in and out if they were having any mobility issues. The frameless shower door has a pivoting action hinges which allows the door to be pushed both ways. A shower bench was installed opposite the plumbing fixtures to allow for sitting if needed. The plumbing fixtures also have accessible attributes with both a handheld shower and a rain head shower, along with a temp control valve for a consistent water temperature and a 3-way diverter to allow water flow to either or both shower heads at the same time.
The vanity spaces were only changed aesthetically. The cabinets were in excellent condition, so we chose to paint the cabinets Stormy Monday by Benjamin Moore. This grey worked well with the countertops that was part of the previous design and the grey grain pattern in the tile used throughout the wet location.
For reference, the fixtures in the shower and sink faucets are of the Dryden collection from Delta. I personally love Delta fixtures which have great features and design qualities.
